National Institutes of Health - GARD

I joined the NCATS divsion of NIH via a position with Axle Informatics in Sep 2020. As a UX Researcher, I supported a small team that was new to formal UX processes, assisting in the development of various digital platforms. My work spanned a range of user types, from the general public/patients to highly specialized users, such as drug researchers.

User Experience Audit: Public health awareness

Objective

Lead discovery research to understand user needs, assess the current experience, and provide data-driven recommendations for improving the existing web platform.

Timeline

November 2020 - March 2021 (5 months)

Team

Me + UI/UX Lead, Product Owner, 2 UI designers, 5+ Content writers

The Challenge

Product was mandated to redesign its core web platform to better deliver accessible and accurate information for patients living with rare diseases and their caretakers. The primary goals were to increase comprehension and usability. Research conducted in-house was a new function, as the organization had previously relied on external consultants for research needs. We faced the challenge of leveraging existing, incomplete user data to define the most critical areas for design improvement while successfully navigating a low UX maturity environment.

Methods

  1. SME Interviews
  2. Moderated Usability Testing
  3. Survey for benchmarking experiences

Outcomes

  1. Identified and fleshed out a new persona to capture a key unmet user segment.
  2. Specific content and design recommendations provided to the content writers and UI/UX designers.
  3. Contributed to the delivery of the redesigned web platform: See it live here
